Silverline Beta launch – the first step….

Today we officially launched the free beta of our new Silverline service. Silverline makes it possible to increase the utilization of server resources by allowing workloads that are flexible with respect to when they are run, to coexist on the same server with a “primary” interactive or otherwise response-time sensitive workload, and use resources not needed for the primary workload. In a previous blog entry I mentioned that we would launch the Silverline beta with support for Amazon EC2 server instances. However, we have made great progress and I’m very happy that we’re now able to support any server, whether it’s virtual or physical, in any environment, whether it’s a public cloud, a private cloud or a “conventional” datacenter.

The launch of Silverline represents a radically new way of offering complex Systems Software through a “frictionless” deployment and business model. Deployment is frictionless because we’re providing the policy management and reporting functions as a service and all the user needs to do to use the service (which requires knowledge of just one command: “silverline”), is download a small amount of software onto the servers he or she wants to use it on. The business model is frictionless since the first month of use will be free, and after that users are charged only for the benefits they derive from the service.

The “spare cycle harvesting” offered by Silverline today is great for improving the utilization of server resources, but just the first step. We plan to make additional capabilities offered by our workload management products available in a similar “frictionless” manner, including detailed workload monitoring, server consolidation, and support for managing workload in multi-tenant applications (see my previous blog entry).
